Frequently Asked Questions.
Do you offer telehealth or in-person therapy?
I currently offer telehealth therapy only for clients in California, Oregon, and Wisconsin. All sessions are conducted through a secure, HIPAA-compliant video platform.
Do you take insurance?
Yes. I am in-network with several insurance plans. If I am not in-network with your plan, I can provide a superbill for potential reimbursement from your insurance.
Do you offer consultations?
Yes! I offer a free 15-minute phone consultation for new clients.
Contact me through the form or email me, and we can schedule a time to connect.
What is the cost of therapy?
My standard rate is $150 per session (45–55 minutes).
I offer limited sliding-scale spots for clients paying out of pocket.
Under the No Surprises Act, uninsured or self-pay clients are entitled to a Good Faith Estimate of expected costs.
Do you work with couples?
Currently, we only work with individuals, not couples.
What forms of payment do you accept?
I accept debit cards, credit cards, Health Savings Accounts HSA.
Can my session be longer than scheduled? What if I’m late?
Because I see clients back-to-back, sessions must end on time. If you arrive late, I can’t guarantee you will be seen. After 15 minutes, you forfeit your session and will be charged the no-show fee of $50. I can’t extend past the scheduled ending time. In some cases, we may not have enough time for EMDR if the session is shortened.
What is your cancellation policy?
To cancel or reschedule, please email me at hello@thatgaytherapist.com or Karisa@thatgaytherapist.com at least 24 hours before your appointment.
Cancellations within 24 hours or no-shows are subject to a $50 fee, which must be paid before scheduling your next session.
I understand that emergencies happen, and I am mindful of that, but I cannot guarantee you won’t be charged.
What is EMDR Therapy?
EMDR (Eye Movement Desensitization and Reprocessing) is an evidence-based therapy recognized by the World Health Organization as a first-line treatment for PTSD. It helps the brain reprocess painful or traumatic memories so they no longer cause the same emotional distress.
As an EMDRIA Certified EMDR therapist, I use EMDR to help clients with:
Trauma & PTSD
Anxiety
Depression
Religious trauma
Attachment wounds
Identity-based trauma
EMDR can be done fully through telehealth. I will teach grounding and coping skills before processing memories to make sure you feel safe and supported.
What does online EMDR look like?
Online EMDR is secure, effective, and often more comfortable because you can be in your own environment. I use virtual bilateral stimulation through:
Eye movements
Tapping
Alternating tones
We will discuss what method works best for you and what feels most grounding and supportive.
Can I use EMDR even if I don’t have PTSD?
Yes. Although EMDR is widely used for PTSD, it can also help with:
Anxiety
Depression
Shame
Self-worth
Relationship wounds
Childhood trauma
Distressing memories
Internalized/externalized homophobia & transphobia
You don’t need a PTSD diagnosis to benefit.
Will I be diagnosed?
A diagnosis can be helpful for understanding patterns and building a treatment plan. I diagnose only when clinically appropriate and when we both agree it may benefit your care.
If you use insurance, many plans require a diagnosis for reimbursement. If you pay privately, I only diagnose with your knowledge and consent.
You can always ask about your diagnosis—I believe in transparency.
I’ve tried therapy before and didn’t like it. How will this be different?
Therapy is deeply shaped by the relationship you have with your therapist. Many clients come to me after working with therapists who felt judgmental, dismissive, or disconnected.
My style is authentic, relational, warm, and non-judgmental. I listen to your story with care, curiosity, and respect. I show up as a real human in the room, not a blank slate.
